WELCOME TO THE CERRITO SPEAKEASY THEATER!
California’s second exclusive restaurant/movie theater/community venue!
Inspired by the success of the PARKWAY SPEAKEASY in Oakland, the City of El Cerrito asked founders Kyle and Catherine Fischer to re-open, re-furbish, restore and re-invent the landmark Cerrito Theater on San Pablo Blvd. For years closed as a movie venue but active as a furniture warehouse, the Cerrito was both revived and transformed into a “speakeasy” theater when it opened its doors on November 1, 2006.
A “Speakeasy” theater is a one-stop entertainment destination that also serves as a nexus for the diverse demographics of its eclectic environs. The Fischers brought their uniquely talented team, including current Cerrito GM Jenny Martens, and programmer/publicist/B movie lounge lizard Will “the Thrill” Viharo to the Cerrito, and in addition to duplicating their previous successes, they built upon their original model, modifying it accordingly to suit their new digs and pool of patrons. Like the Parkway, the Cerrito offers a wide range of delicious food items, including pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads, as well as beer and wine, to enjoy in a comfortable, living room/nightclub environment while watching the recent Hollywood hits, classics, obscure cult favorites, local films, special benefit screenings, and more. Of course the ever popular Baby Brigade and 2 for 1 Wednesdays would also survive the move from Oakland to El Cerrito.
The Fischers ensured the Cerrito would be just as reflective of the needs and desires of its community as the Parkway is to its particular neck of the woods. It is this combination of dedication, creative vision, programming flexibility and social responsibility that sets Speakeasy Theaters apart from all the rest. Thank YOU for making the second Speakeasy Theater just as popular – and just as true to its own unique identity – as the first. We’re here to serve you! Cheers!
The History and Cultural Impact of Rialto Cinemas Cerrito
A Brief History
The Cerrito Theater, located in El Cerrito, California, is a remarkable example of cultural heritage preservation and its significance to local communities. Initially opened on December 25, 1937, the theater quickly became a beloved gathering place for residents of El Cerrito and the surrounding area. Designed in the art-deco style, the Cerrito Theater originally accommodated 644 patrons.
However, in the early 1960s, the theater ceased operations and was repurposed as a storage warehouse for Kiefer’s Furniture store. This continued until 2001 when the furniture store closed, and the building was put up for sale.
When it was discovered that many of the original art-deco interior elements remained intact, a group of local citizens formed “Friends of the Cerrito Theater” to preserve and restore this iconic building. In 2002, the City of El Cerrito acquired the building and selected Speakeasy Theaters to operate the theater post-restoration.
After meticulous restoration work, including the refurbishment of original design elements and integration of modern amenities, the theater reopened on November 1, 2006, under the name Cerrito Speakeasy. However, due to financial challenges, Speakeasy Theaters ceased operations in May 2009, leading to another temporary closure.
In July 2009, Rialto Cinemas was selected as the new operator, reopening the theater as Rialto Cinemas Cerrito on July 15, 2009. In 2018, due to changes in California state law, the city sold the theater building to Rialto with the condition that it maintains its historic features and continues operation as a theater or cultural venue for the next 99 years.
